Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court at Aso Pada, Nasarawa State, on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old welder, Usman Abubakar, to year and a half detainment for taking a sack of garri.
Abubakar, who lives at Shopping Centre Mararaba, was sentenced on one-count of robbery.
The judge, Mr Albert Maga, sentenced the convict after he conceded to the wrongdoing and asked for tolerance.
The convict said that hunger drove him to wrongdoing.
"It was hunger that drove me to do it, I have remained without sustenance for quite a long time and I required cash to purchase nourishment.
"Show mercy toward me and I guarantee never to do it again,'' he argued.
The judge, nonetheless, gave the convict N5,000 alternative of fine.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Agabi Auta, told the court that one Anjenu John of Aku town, Mararaba, revealed the issue at the "A" Divisional Police Base camp Mararaba on Aug. 25.
Auta stated, "The litigant went into the complainant's shop situated along Darika Jummat Mosque, Mararaba and stole a pack of garri esteemed at N15, 000.
The prosecutor included that the litigant was taking ceaselessly the pack of garri when he was secured by the complainant and gave him over to the police.
He said that amid examination, the litigant admitted to taking the thing with a view to offering it and inspire cash to purchase other nourishment things.
Auta said that the offense contradicted the arrangements of Segment 287 of the Corrective Code. (NAN)
